FORMER NBA COACH OF THE YEAR SAM MITCHELL JOINS USBASKET CHAMPIONS LEAGUE AS OFFICIAL SPOKESMAN

COLUMBUS, GA — The USBasket Champions League continues to add major basketball experience ahead of its inaugural international championship in 2027.

Former NBA Coach of the Year Sam Mitchell has officially joined the USBasket Champions League (UCL) as a spokesman and ambassador for the event.

Mitchell will help represent and promote the Champions League as the organization prepares to bring teams from the United States, Mexico, Canada and the Caribbean to Columbus, Georgia, for UCL2K27, July 10–14, 2027.

FROM NBA PLAYER TO NBA COACH OF THE YEAR

Mitchell brings decades of NBA experience to the Champions League.

He played 13 seasons in the NBA, appearing in 994 regular-season games during his career with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Indiana Pacers. Mitchell became an important veteran presence in Minnesota, where he played 10 seasons, and also helped Indiana reach the 1995 Eastern Conference Finals.

Following his playing career, Mitchell moved into coaching and eventually became head coach of the Toronto Raptors.

His defining season came in 2006–07, when Mitchell led Toronto to 47 victories, its first Atlantic Division championship and home-court advantage in the playoffs. The Raptors improved by 20 victories from the previous season, and Mitchell was named the 2007 NBA Coach of the Year.

He later returned to Minnesota as an assistant and eventually served as the Timberwolves' interim head coach, adding another chapter to a career that has allowed him to experience professional basketball as a player, assistant coach and NBA head coach.

COULD MITCHELL ALSO COACH AT UCL2K27? 👀

While Mitchell's position as a USBasket Champions League spokesman is official, there could be another role waiting for him when the ball goes up in Columbus.

Mitchell has been rumored to be in discussions to coach the Mexican representative expected to participate in the 2027 USBasket Champions League.

Sources surrounding the event indicate that Mitchell and the Mexican organization have discussed terms, with growing expectations that he could be on the sideline when UCL2K27 begins.

No coaching agreement has been officially announced at this time.

The Mexican club itself is scheduled to be formally introduced in October, and additional details regarding its coaching staff will be announced when appropriate.

If an agreement is finalized, it would put a former NBA Coach of the Year on the sideline against the Champions League field, adding another level of credibility and competition to the inaugural tournament.

UCL2K27 IS TAKING SHAPE

The GIE Cibao Immortals 🇩🇴 have already been announced as the first selected organization and will represent the Caribbean region.

Additional representatives from Canada 🇨🇦 and Mexico 🇲🇽 are coming next as the eight-team international field continues to take shape.

And now, one of the most respected basketball figures involved with the event has an official role.
